1001 Boats

No comment - Post a comment

1001 Boats is a website that is documenting 1001 boats in order to raise money for charity. They are posting photos and information on a huge range of boats. As they state they want to post  “1001 Boats which inspire, boats which fascinate, boats which captured the imagination of a small boy, boats which carry grown men to adventure, boats which are too important to be forgotten, boats which are beautiful, boats which are significant.”

Check out the website if you want to learn something new or you can submit ideas for boats that you would like them to feature.

The Volvo Ocean Race and the America’s Cup World Series has been taking place the last month or two. If you need something to pass your time in the off season there’s a lot of great footage worth checking out. Below is Part 1 of a documentary on this year’s Volvo Ocean Race.

Winter Practice

Winter is here and we have 5 months to go before the Ice Breaker!

In the meantime you can practice your sailing strategy, picking lay lines and planing tacks by playing the free version of Virtual Skipper 5 Online. You can take the helm of some big boats like the Class America, Open 60, Melges 24 and sail at 14 of the best competitive sailing locales.

For the computer savvy you can also install 3rd party additions, including the Tornado Olympic class boats and the Extreme 40 class.

UPDATE: Having tried out Virtual Skipper 5 I was a bit disappointed with the type of sailing you could do with it. It’s great for developing strategy but the game play can be a bit slow and all of the sail adjustments are too automated. It seems that the other main sailing platform out there is Sail Simulator 5. They also have a free demo version available where you can race online. This game is more fun right off the bat and you have full control of all of the boat’s adjustments. You can even control the skipper and crew positions to adjust boat balance or to move your weight out onto the trapeze, and if you mess up you actually capsize the boat. You can also purchase the add-on Boat Set 1 that gives you a bunch of new boats including the Hobie Tiger and the NACRA F18 Infusion.

Love-love is a perpetually sinking boat created by French artist Julien Berthier. The boat sits at a 45 degree angle to the water’s surface as though it were sinking, thanks to its customized keel which balances the boat in place.

For those of you who missed the Summer Games Regatta it was interrupted after only a single race. The short version of the story is that a micro-burst touched down and leveled every boat on the lake. As far as I could see every boat went turtle almost instantly. Thanks to the quick actions of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the State Park Rangers and the local Sheriffs everyone was plucked from the lake safely (for the most part). I think only two of us made the trip to the hospital.

Many boats were damaged and broken. Hopefully we can get a few patched up well enough for the 4th of July Event which is only a short 3 weeks away.

Sunday there was also only 1 race held before the State Park Rangers kicked everyone off the lake at the first rain drop for fear of a repeat of what happened Saturday.  The remaining boats included a number of Lasers, a Thistle, 2 Swift Solos, and two catamarans (Shaun’s F-18 and a Nacra 5.7 that showed up to play).

If you have any war stories to share post them in the forum using the link below.  Also, those of you that took photos please upload them on the photos page.  If you have any trouble uploading them please contact or
